I listened to it as an audio book several years ago and was SOBBING through the final chapters. It was just so incredibly well written that it took my breath away. Haven't seen the movie yet but I have the same hesitations about it that you do. A word of sad warning, her next book the Mermaid Chair is a complete letdown after Secret Life of Bees, so you may want to avoid it. It's not even half as good in my opinion, which is a total bummer.
